Meet American Girl author Kathleen Ernst | Decorah Public Library Community Event (not sponsored by Dragonfly Books) Thursday, November 29 at 6:30 PM at Decorah Public Library American Girl fans of all ages are invited to attend a special program featuring American Girl author Kathleen Ernst at Decorah Public Library on Thursday Nov. 29 at 6:30 pm. The event is sponsored and hosted by the Friends of the Decorah Public Library.
Kathleen Ernst is an award-winning author who has written many works of fiction for young readers. She is the author of six brand new American Girl books about Caroline Abbott, a girl growing up in the tiny village of Sackets Harbor, New York, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. The Nov. 29 event will conclude with a prize drawing for an American Girl doll (Caroline) and books (prize drawing open to Friends members only; a Junior Membership is just $2 and attendees may sign up at the event).
Ernst has also written the following American Girl titles: Trouble at Fort La Pointe, Whistler in the Dark, Betrayal at Cross Creek, Danger at the Zoo: A Kit Mystery, Secrets in the Hills: A Josefina Mystery, Midnight in Lonesome Hollow: A Kit Mystery, The Runaway Friend: A Kirsten Mystery, and Clues in the Shadows: A Molly Mystery.
Ernst studied environmental education, history, and writing at West Virginia University. She also earned an M.A. in History Education and Writing from Antioch University. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as an educator at parks and historic sites from Florida to Montana, including twelve years spent as a curator at a large historic site in Wisconsin. Honors for the instructional programs she scripted for public television include an Emmy Award, a Platinum Best-in-Show Aurora Award, and a National Award of Excellence from the National Educational Telecommunications Association.
She loves helping young readers get excited about reading, writing, and history. “I encourage readers to imagine themselves in the situations I write about. How would they have faced such challenges? It’s very empowering for kids to empathize with fictional characters who find creative, helpful ways to confront conflicts and hardships.”
Ernst lives in Wisconsin, but enjoys traveling to different locales in search of new stories.
The Friends of Decorah Public Library promote and enhance library programming for the leisure, entertainment, and life-long learning of the citizens of Decorah and greater Winneshiek County. Call Decorah Public Library at 382-3717 for more information about the Friends group or the Nov. 29 program.
