First-person Plural Workshop Reading - October 10
Galaxy Bookshop, Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 7pm
Participants of Constance Hale and Zoe Fitzgerald-Carter's "First-person Plural" writing workshop will be at The Galaxy Bookshop on Wednesday, October 10th, at 7 p.m., to read from the pieces they spent the day editing and fine-tuning.
A bit about the workshop:
In this intimate and unusual workshop, writers will work under the guidance of authors Zoe FitzGerald Carter and Constance Hale, both of whom have published memoirs and first-person essays in magazines as varied as Vogue, Health, Honolulu, The Atlantic, and O.
The workshop begins Tuesday night, October 9, at The Galaxy Bookshop in Hardwick, where Connie will talk about her new book Vex, hex, smash, smooch and share surprising insights about what makes writing come alive on the page.
Participants have the option of staying at home, if they live nearby, or staying in Zoe’s cabin on Lake Caspian in Greensboro. After a Vermont breakfast at the Carter home, Zoe and Connie will spend the day there working with writers on their pieces, in a mix of guided writing, critique sessions, coaching, and private writing time. The day will close with a dinner at Claire's Restaurant in Hardwick, and a reading by all participants at the Galaxy.
The workshop is open to writers of all levels and sessions will be tailored to the group. Lodging is available Tuesday and/or Wednesday nights, $30 per night for singles and $50 for doubles (rooms have two twin beds or one queen). The fee for the workshop, which includes breakfast, lunch, and the readings, is $100. The Wednesday dinner at Claire’s will be pay-as-you-go and is open to family members and friends.

A graduate of Columbia Journalism School, Zoe FitzGerald Carter has written for numerous publications including The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Salon, and Vogue. Her first memoir, Imperfect Endings, won first place in the Pacific Northwest Writer's Association's literary contest and was a finalist at The San Francisco Writer's Conference. It was excerpted in O magazine and was chosen as a finalist for the National MS Society's Books for a Better Life Awards in the "Inspirational Memoir" category. Zoe lives in Northern California with her husband and two daughters.

Constance Hale is a San Francisco-based journalist known for her three books on the craft of writing: Wired Style, Sin and Syntax, and Vex, hex, smash, smooch. In spring 2012, her eight-part series on writing stellar sentences appeared in the New York Times Opinionator. Her personal essays have been published in the Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Chronicle as well various national magazines and in France, A Love Story (Seal Press), 30 Days in Italy (Travelers’ Tales), and Best Travel Writing 2006 (Travelers’ Tales).
