"We've never hosted an event with a polar bear, so I've been reading up on the care and feeding of giant Arctic mammals," says Beth Wagner, Phoenix's children's book buyer. "I was a little concerned when I saw Total's request for several cases of chicken nuggets. Then I remembered that he also loves Rice Krispies treats. Good thing we've got a cafe and expert bakers on staff!"
"But if you are asking, 'Is Total real?'" adds Debra Woodward, Sales Representative for Candlewick Press in New England, "I would answer...was Calvin’s tiger Hobbes real? Do you believe in Santa Claus? Come and see for yourself at his only appearance in northern New England—no matter what your age. Witness 'greatness' on May 17th." In fact, Phoenix Books is one of only six bookstores in the United States to have been chosen to host a Total Takeover event.
The first book, Timmy Failure: Mistakes were made, which released in February 2013, has spent over 20 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in the U.S. and was #1 on the American Booksellers Association Indie Next List. Rights have been sold by Writers House in 30 countries to date. The second book, Timmy Failure: Now Look What You’ve Done was released on February 25, 2014. About the second installment Booklist jokingly declared, “Timmy Failure, would-be supersleuth and self-anointed smartest person in the world, is back, and he has learned absolutely nothing from his previous adventure.” Author Stephen Pastis is also well-loved for his Pearls Before Swine daily cartoon, syndicated in 750 newspapers around the world.
This is an official Children's Book Week event. Children's Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children's Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, commemorative events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes—wherever young readers and books connect! Children's Book Week is administered by Every Child A Reader, a 501(c)(3) literacy organization dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of reading in children. The Children's Book Council, the national non-profit trade association for children's book publishers, is an anchor sponsor. Why you should go: Celebrate Children's Book Week with activities, giveaways, raffles, and more detective fun! There will be photo ops with Total the Polar Bear in your own "distinctive scarf," signed books for sale, and GREATNESS! Great for: EVERYONE, but especially middle readers and fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Phoenix Books booksellers love Timmy Failure! Here, Rachel, Kelly, and Beth celebrate the Greatness that is this series:
