I confess this was a bit of slog for me to get through; as someone who saw me with the book remarked, "that's awfully long for an 'essay.'" In retrospect, once you have a grasp of his thesis from the early chapters, it may not be necessary to work through all the subsequent explanations.

"The customary view is that the Chicago school [of sociology] comprises a period [roughly 1915-1935], a set of professors [Park, Burgess, Faris, Thomas], a set of students [Wirth, Blummer, etc.], and a body of work. The work cannot be categorized simply, but there are some general similarities: it is "often about the city," usually Chicago; it examines "social movements and cultural change" in terms of group interactions; and it has a "certain empirical, even observational flavor…There were three "central examination areas": social psychology," "social organization," and "ecology."… (more)

I was fortunate enough to have this book assigned during my first semester in graduate school. It is wonderfully clear and absolutely invaluable to me as a student in the social sciences.
