Princess Alexandra of Denmark married Albert Edward, Prince of Wales in 1863 and was Princess of Wales for nearly 40 years before becoming Queen Alexandra on her husband's accession as King Edward VII. She was popular with the public and the leader of British fashion and high society -- her preferences in clothes, jewelry, and sports were widely imitated.
