In 1959, Dr. Altholz became an instructor of history at the University of Minnesota, moving up to the rank of professor in 1967. His specialty was 19th century English history. In addition to his teaching duties at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Altholz was the president of the American Catholic Historical Association (1986-1987) and founder of the Society for Victorian Periodicals conference. He retired from the University in May of 2003 and died on August 2, 2003.
