Short biography
Ludovico Ariosto's best-known work, Orlando Furioso, an epic poem, was widely influential on later literature. The action takes place against the backdrop of the war between Charlemagne and the Muslim army attempting to invade Europe. It includes many fantastical and magical elements such as the hippogriff. An important subplot is the paladin Orlando's unrequited love for the pagan princess Angelica, which develops into the madness of the title.
