Short biography
Khassan Baiev was born in Alkhan Kala, Chechnya and educated in Russia. He had a successful practice in Moscow; when hostilities began between Russia and Chechnya, he returned home knowing that his countrymen would need him. He resolutely treated anyone who was brought to him, causing some Chechens to consider him a traitor and some Russians to consider him a terrorist. He often worked in the line of fire, and without proper medical supplies. Finally, the determination of the Russians to arrest him as a "bandit" forced him to flee to the United States where he now lives with his family.
