Margaret Campbell Barnes was a popular historical novelist in the 1940s and 1950s. Her vivid narrative style and careful historical research made her books stand out among others of the genre, and a number of them have been re-released recently with new covers due to renewed interest in her work. She was the youngest of 10 children born in the Sussex countryside. In 1917, she married Peter Barnes, a furniture salesman, and had two sons, one of whom was killed during World War II. More than two million copies of Margaret Campbell Barnes's historical novels have been sold worldwide.
