Tom Holland (1968) brak bij het grote publiek door met zijn boek Rubicon. Het einde van de Romeinse republiek. Het boek valt op door de vaart waarmee het geschreven is – met name de eerste hoofdstukken lezen als een avonturenroman. Rubicon werd een bestseller, evenals opvolgers Perzisch Vuur en De gang naar Canossa. Twee auteurs met een staat van dienst dus, die met elkaar in gesprek zullen gaan over hun boeken.
