He won the Royal Television Society's Reporter of the Year award in 1977 and 1993, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1992. Martin left the BBC for politics just 24 days before the 1997. He ran on an independent, anti-corruption ticket at Tatton and easily won the seat.
