Sarah Bernhardt, nicknamed "The Divine Sarah," was the most famous actress of the 19th century, and has been called the most famous actress the world has ever known. She became a star in France in the 1860s and soon was in demand internationally. She toured Europe and the Americas and on returning to France played in her own productions almost continuously until her death. Her popularity survived her physical deterioration, when her voice alone continued to draw crowds. Bernhardt also made some of the earliest silent films in the early 1900s.
