Halina Berenbaum spent the years of German occupation of her country in World War II in four concentration camps and was finally liberated in 1945. In 1947, she immigrated to Israel, where she worked on a kibbutz until she married in 1950. She and her husband have two sons. She lectures and meets with Israeli youth, sharing her firsthand knowledge of the Holocaust. Her memoir Hope Is the Last to Die: A Coming of Age Under the Nazi Terror, was first published in Polish in 1967.
