Investigative reporter Jane Harper is on an anti-whaling vessel observing whether or not The Sentinel is following proper protocol. In a decisive NOT following protocol, the Sentinel rams the Blixum and both ships sink. The survivors land on an island off the coast of Greenland and inadvertently set free the ancient draugar, the walking zombie vampire dead. As more and more survivors die, Jane is left trying to figure a way off the island before it's too late and before the draugar plague wipes out humanity.… (more)
SO funny and a great horror read. Loved the characters and the fact that sarcasm used by the main character isn't snark. I know snark is popular but the way it is done in most books is dumb. This is intelligent, witty repartee. The Sentinel is a book that made me smile while I was reading it. What a great movie this would make.
I enjoyed this apocalyptic romp in alternate universes. The characters were very interesting, authentic, flawed and heroic. I really connected to this small town trying to survive the unimaginable.
My goodness. DO YOU UNDERSTAND what kind of a plotting genius you have to be to make the concept of Zombie Whales work!
I mean when I first read the summary for this book, my brow rose and my mouth hung a little slack. "Zombie Whales?!?!", I thought. "Really." But other folks were signing up so I requested THE RAVEN and then went and spent some bucks on the first eBook in this series, THE SENTINEL. And I'm glad I did.
This series isn't Cormac McCarthy or Shakespeare, but it is a rollicking good time if you are looking for a smart-ass heroine who can kick some butt. What I liked about THE SENTINEL was the solid foundation that the author provided. The book starts off as if you were on one of the anti-whaling boats that take on the Japanese whalers on the Discovery Channel. Then comes the fantastic elements, which include zombie Norsemen or draugr. And because of the delay of the 'unusual', it totally worked for me. I found the premise easily acceptable.
Now, THE RAVEN is a continuation of the story as the danger to the world increases as the zombie-process is spread by marine life. Ships go missing and the next thing you know Jane is back in action.
The story is just as much fun in this second book, but I've backed off a bit when it comes to Stars because some of the action is less believable. And, I thought the book was a little long. (But then again, I think most books could be trimmed at bit.)
Principal character:: a smart-ass chick who can kick some butt Time Frame:: modern Language:: expect the f-bomb but little that's worse Humor:: definitely Creepy:: not really Disbelief O'meter:: not exactly full-speed ahead, but close
Great series if you love sarcastic heroines that don't fool around.
