Short biography
Ann Lady Blencowe, née Ann Wallis, was a daughter of John Wallis, the English mathematician and professor of geometry at Oxford University. In 1675, she married as his second wife Sir John Blencowe, a lawyer and Member of Parliament. Ann Blencowe and her sister were described by John Audrey as being "very handsome young gentlewomen." Her 1694 work The Receipt Book of Mrs. Ann Blencowe contains instructions for making herbal potions and remedies that wellborn 17th-century women would use to treat (physic) their families, servants, and even animals, as well as recipes for almond pudding and other cooked dishes.
