A slim (25 page) pamphlet on how to maintain graveyards, from the Irish Office of Public Works. It’s not clear who’s the intended audience; it’s noted some graveyards are owned by churches, some are national property, and some are privately owned. The would-be restorer is advised to verify ownership before proceeding. David Lloyd George boasted that he had Murder by the Throat in a speech at the Guildhall in London on 10 November 1920. This book documents how he and Churchill had flooded Ireland with Secret Service assassins, temporary police - the Black & Tans and Auxiliary Cadets as well as 70,000 troops.

The book is incredibly detailed and fully referenced for further research. It contains names of "enemy agents" identified by the IRA as well as listing the agents executed by the IRA.

The book follows a sequence through voting for a parliament in Dublin, abstaining from London Parliament, introduction of the forces of suppression, counter intelligence, assassination and peace at the Truce.

The book challenges some common misconceptions about the secret service Cairo gang, the complete detail that forewarned the British about 1916 rising and the revolutionary fervour among the population.

Murder by the throat attempts and succeeds in adding dates and names to the vague eyewitness accounts by the witness statements in the Bureau of Military History. This is not another tale of daring do by gallant IRA fighting the british enemy from the hillsides. It is a forensic study of the network of British supporters, agents and touts and how they were countered.
