Lady Elizabeth Cavendish was the daughter of William Cavendish, later 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his first wife Elizabeth Basset. In 1641, at age 15, she married John Egerton, then Viscount Brackley, but continued to live at her family home. She was the author of a substantial number of writings on the Bible, prayers, meditations, and essays. In 1649, John Egerton succeeded his father to become 2nd Earl of Bridgewater and Elizabeth became known as Countess of Bridgewater. She had 10 children, of whom 4 survived to adulthood. She died in childbirth after going into premature labor while travelling to visit her husband in London.
