Short biography
William Bradford was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1590. He joined the separatist congregation of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, and with them moved, seeking increased separateness, to Holland, then, on the noted Mayflower, to North America. He was soon chosen governor of the Plymouth Colony and was reelected many times. He left a gloomy account of his experiences and opinions, now known as Of Plymouth Plantation. He died and was buried at Plymouth in 1657, by which time the Pilgrim religious project and zeal had largely vanished in the winds of history.
