Anna, comtesse de Brémont was born Anna Dunphy in New York. She married comte Leon de Brémont, a French physician, and moved to England after his death in 1882. She became a friend of Lady Jane Francesca Wilde, Oscar Wilde's mother. She was also said to have been South Africa’s first female journalist working at a daily newspaper. She wrote more than a dozen books, including a memoir of the Wildes and The Ragged Edge: Tales of the African Gold Fields (1895).
