- Lili Brik (alternatively spelled Lily) was born Lilya Yuryevna Kagan in Moscow to a wealthy Russian Jewish family. She was the older sister of Elsa Triolet. Both sisters received an excellent education and spoke fluent French and German as well as Russian. She graduated from the Moscow Institute of Architecture and in 1912, at age 20, married Osip Brik, the poet and literary critic. Known for her wit and beauty, she was a model for portraits by famous artists such as Marc Chagall, Alexander Tyshler, Alexander Rodchenko, David Burlyuk, Fernand Léger, and Henri Matisse. She became an author and socialite, and one of the most influential figures of the Russian avant-garde of the early 20th century. She was the muse of poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, who became inseparable from the Briks and shared their home in a ménage à trois from 1918 to his death in 1930. Their apartment was also a meeting place for cultural luminaries such as Boris Pasternak, Maxim Gorky, Sergei M. Eisenstein, and many others. In the 1910s and 1920s, Lili also starred in and directed several films. After a divorce from Brik, in 1938, Lili married Vasily Katanyan, also a writer, and played an important role in supporting the new generation of writers, musicians, artists, and filmmakers in the Soviet Union. In the 1950s, she published Literary Heritage, the collected letters between herself and Mayakovsky. In 1978, following a fall and suffering serious after-effects, she committed suicide by taking a lethal dose of sleeping pills.
