Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts on August 17, 1862. Studied at Brown and Cornell Universities and Harvard Divinity School. Graduated from Brown in 1887. Professor of English at De Pauw University (1890); Associate Professor at Brown in 1892 and full Professor of English Literature in 1895. Retired in 1927 and moved to the south of France for his health; died in Oxford England on June 2, 1928.
