The eldest daughter of the late Sinn Féin Lord of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, who died on hunger strike in Brixton Prison during the War of Independence, Máire was born into a revolutionary family. She later married Ruairí Brugha, the sole child of the Sinn Féin TD and Minister for Defence, Cathal Brugha, who was killed during the Civil War. Her husband was subsequently a Fianna Fáil TD and MEP and she was President of her local cumann in South Dublin until her death.
