The focus of this volume is Bader's leadership qualities and how he passed these skills on to the many men who served in his squadrons mainly during the Battle of Britain and how they became the leaders of the RAF after he was shot down and captured in August 1941. When one reads the title, one would expect a biography but most of the book is about tactics, aircraft and the men who led the the many squadrons in the various British air services including the navy and Coastal Command.

One of positive aspects of the volume is that we learn about many amazing men who fought and led other men in the many battles fought against the German Luftwaffe. As well as the many biographies included are the background on the development of the many aircraft types the British used in the war.

Not a read for the casual reader as Burns has included details about every squadron in the RAF and who commanded at all stages.
