We welcome you to another of our popular ”University in the Library” series featuring lectures on important writers by some of America’s finest literary scholars. This evening we welcome the prize-winning Emory University Professor Dr. Rudolph Byrd, distinguished scholar and a major figure in Emory’s Alice Walker Collection, discussing one of America’s most significant African-American authors, Jean Toomer, and his novel ”Cane.” Dr. Byrd, with Henry Louis Gates, is the editor of a new critical edition of ”Cane.” Originally published in 1923, ”Cane” is part drama, part poetry and is considered a masterpiece of the Harlem Renaissance. We are honored to have Dr. Byrd discuss Toomer’s work, and we know you’ll find his lecture one of the most rewarding in our series. An Evening for Sister Audre: Author Event & Silent Auction Rudolph P. ByrdPlease join Charis at Oakhurst Baptist Church (at the corner of East Lake Drive and Third Avenue in Decatur) for an author event, celebration, and silent auction from 7-9:30 pm on June 13. We will be joined by the editors of "I Am Your Sister: Collected and Unpublished Writings of Audre Lorde"-- Rudolph P. Byrd, Johnnetta Betsch Cole, & Beverly Guy-Sheftall. A collection of Audre Lorde's non-fiction prose, "I Am Your Sister" introduces new perspectives on the depth and range of her intellectual interests and commitments to progressive social change. Following the reading and discussion, there will be a reception to celebrate and honor this important book and its amazingly gifted editors. Both before and after the event, guests are invited to participate in a silent auction to benefit Charis Circle, with art, gift certificates, books, jewelry, & more. This event is co-sponsored by ZAMI and SisterSong. Copies of "I Am Your Sister" are available now at Charis Books & More, and will be for sale at the event.
