Javier Cercas seized our attention with Soldiers of Salamis, a compelling fictional treatment of real characters in the Spanish Civil War, his first novel to be translated into English and winner of the IFFP in 2004. (more)coup d’état of 1981, but this time he’s turned to non-fiction as the only way to treat a moment of history that was itself, as he says, ‘a neurosis, a paranoia, a collective novel’. He’ll talk about the book with Paul Preston, professor of Spanish history at LSE, and Nick Caistor, translator and journalist, who reported from Spain at the time of the coup. Our chair will be the novelist and historical biographer Lisa Hilton. This event takes place in association with English PEN’s Writers in Translation programme, which works to increase access to writing from around the world by developing audiences and infrastructure for international literature in translation.
