Denis Cannan was born Denis Pullein-Thompson, the son of writer Joanna Cannan and Captain Harold "Cappy" Pullein-Thompson. He was part of a large literary family that included his maternal aunt May Cannan, a poet, and cousin Gilbert Cannan, a novelist-playwright. He and his three sisters all became writers. After attending Eton, he worked as an actor before becoming a successful playwright and screenwriter.
