Short biography
Olga Andreyev Carlisle was born into a famous Russian literary family in exile. She's visited but never lived in Russia, and yet throughout her life the idea of Russia has shaped her world. She grew up in Paris, where she was an aspiring painter when she fell in love with Henry Carlisle, an American soldier serving in World War II. She came with him to the USA and in New York City joined the community of artists and writers including Robert Lowell and Robert Motherwell. In the 1960s she travelled to Russia and befriended many of the country's prominent writers.
