The Big Exit
Author David Carnoy currently lives in New York but grew up in Menlo Park and has written two mystery/thrillers that take place in and around Menlo Park. His debut novel, Knife Music (2010), was a bestseller on the Kindle and Nook. Publishers Weekly says his new Silicon Valley thriller, The Big Exit, has it all: "A convoluted but convincing plot, a likable protagonist facing terrible odds, and a meaty supporting cast working for and against him...this exceptionally satisfying murder puzzle should whet readers' appetites for more." And Kirkus calls it, "A first-rate crime caper.". Richie Forman is freshly out of prison. By night, he makes a living impersonating Frank Sinatra in San Francisco’s lounges and corporate parties. But then his ex-best friend—the man who stole his fiancée while he was in prison—is found hacked to death in his garage, and Richie is the prime suspect. And yes, The Big Exit takes place right here -- in and around Menlo Park and Palo Alto -- and even features the Menlo Park police department! Carnoy will discuss the research that went into writing The Big Exit and the challenges of setting a thriller in Silicon Valley. Carnoy also has an interesting day job. He is a longtime executive editor at CNET and is an expert in e-publishing, e-readers, and self-publishing. Knife Music started out as a self-published novel but was quickly picked up by a traditional publisher (Overlook Press/Penguin) after it showed promise in the marketplace. As part of his discussion, Carnoy will answer questions about the state of the publishing industry, the pros and cons of self-publishing vs. getting a traditional publishing contract, and any gadget questions you might have.
