H.G. Castle

One of Allmark's great battles series from the '70's. Spion Kop is one of many British disasters from the Boer War. This volume, like other books in the series provides background information to the campaign as well as a useful narrative of the battle. This particular volume also recounts the recriminations that came after.

Spion Kop is a less well known than other books in the series-Tobruk, Leipzig, Flodden, or Yorktown, which didn't help its popularity. The troops involved in the battle were pretty generic--your basic Boer, or Tommy in khaki, so lots of the color plates don't seen particularly helpful. This volume might have benefited from more period black and white photos. There is a good Order of Battle, as well as some very basic information on weapons used by both sides.… (more)
