Short biography
Cécile Chaminade, born in Paris, studied music first with her mother, then with private teachers, including Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabriel Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in composition. She gave her first public concert at age 18. She made her London debut in 1892 and her American debut in 1908. The piano music and songs she composed were widely popular and sold well, though her more serious works, including an opera, a ballet, and orchestral suites, were less successful, especially with critics. In 1901, she married Louis-Mathieu Carbonel, a music publisher many years her senior. In 1913, she became the first female composer granted the Legion of Honor.
