Ruth Forbes Chandler was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1942, she graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Bridgewater Normal School
(now Bridgewater State College), and continued her studies at Boston
University and Columbia University.
She married George L.
Chandler, who died in 1966. She became a teacher
and principal in the New Bedford
school system, and was author of several children’s books and short stories. Many of her works focused on children facing difficult
life problems.
