At the exclusive school run by Madame Campan after the French Revolution, Louise Cochelet became friendly with Caroline Bonaparte, a sister of Napoleon, and Hortense de Beauharnais, his step-daughter. When Hortense become Queen of Holland, Louise became her lectrice (reader) and close companion.
