This book is called Non Fiction Comprehension Cliffhangers byTom Conklin and scholastic is a collection of true stories about famous people. It includes the story of Carrie Strug. In her story she is a 13 year old girl training to be in the Olympics. Working with the famous Bella Karolyi she became youngest Gymnast on the American Olympic team, but they only won the Bronze medal. After an injury she took a break as Bella stopped coaching and she could not find a coach like him. In the end she made it to the 1996 Olympics and led her team to win the Gold medal attempting the vault on a broken ankle. A second story tells about a country doctor who cured small pox by infecting a boy with cowpox because he noticed that milkmaids exposed to cowpox did not get small pox. He single handedly eradicated the deadly small pox with his discovery. There was also a story about the scientist who by sneezing into a Petrie dish found our immune system fights disease. He was such a messy scientist that he forgot to clean up his lab. After a long time leaving samples he found that on dish had killed the staff infection in the Petrie dish. He discovered that the mold had killed it. As a result he invented Penecillan and won the Nobel Peace prize.
This book is a great book because it leaves you a cliffhanger wondering what will happen to each famous person then tells you the rest of the story. I like that these stories are true. They are about real people who did great things. Kids can be inspired to do great things by reading about people who did great things. I also like it because it lives up to its name “Cliffhanger” while teaching kids to think and ask questions about what they are reading. Kids should read this book so they can learn about these important historical figures and what they did for the world.
