Short biography
Alistair Cooke had a very long and distinguished career as a journalist and author. He was best known for his long-running radio broadcasts called "Letter from America" and his books -- that is, until he became the host of TV's "Masterpiece Theatre." That job, which lasted from 1971 to 1992, made him a household name in the USA. He was so recognizable to the public that the creators of PBS's "Sesame Street" were able to gently spoof him as Alistair Cookie Monster.
