In the face of Jinn by Cheryl Howard Crew
Meh. Convoluted. Confusing. Oddly slow and rushed at the same time. The brutality is harsh; but probably accurate. Biggest failing of the book, in my mind, is that a rape victim doesn't fall into bed with anyone just a few weeks after two extremely traumatizing rapes...even if this is fiction.

The bizarre fluffiness of the romance clashes unpleasantly with the fast-paced, relentless, and frankly violent narrative up until that point, turning the heroine into a slightly ridiculous Mary Sue. It's a shame, because the story is otherwise intense and readable.

Magatha | 2 other reviews | Aug 19, 2009 | The author did an exceptional job of describing an area of the world with which I am not very familiar. The first half of the book was a fascinating look at different societies within the middle east. As the strong heroine frantically searches for her sister, she faces increasing danger. It is an exciting suspense story...however, the second half of the book introduces too many characters and I found myself skimming some of their stories. The author moves too quickly and the plot begins to jump around. A love story is tossed in - but needs much more to be believable.
Overall a good read that I rated highly based on the storyline but it could have been so much more....… (more)
