I think that the most significant about this book is that it is a warning to us all, not to be too certain of what the future will hold. Crosland is an intelligent man, with his finger on the pulse of British politics and yet, he could be so wrong. Of course, when he made this statement, Britain was at the height of its post war bounce - Harold Wilson was soon to make his 'White heat of technology' speech, the health service had been introduced, major industries were under public ownership and one can understand a certain optimism. What went wrong?
Fifty years on and Socialism is a dirty word: the Labour Party is vying to be more friendly to the Capitalists than the Conservatives - and the people are voting in their droves for a 'Britain or the British' party!
This book offers very little, other than the aforementioned warning.… (more)
