New English Paper Piecing by Sue Daley is a book for all the english paper piecers that don't have time to make more than one of the quilts, made with this method to make hexagon quilts and other quilts that are sewn by individual piece by hand. Daley speeds things up by using acrylic templates with rotary cutting and glue to baste the pieces onto the paper or cardboard. She also uses these small pieces as appliques onto another quilt. New English Paper Piecing isn't just about making hexagon quilts. This book contains 10 projects, some with blocks that form melon shapes, flower shapes and blocks, elongated hexagons, and more. These shapes are embellished with delicate fabric butterflies, and hand embroidery. Daley's book is a good book for beginning english paper piecers, and for all of us with time limits.

Review of "Quick Little Landscape Quilts"
9:11 AM Posted by Judy

“Quick Little Landscape Quilts” by Joyce Becker is one of her most recent books. While the landscapes may be quilted, instead of becoming quilts, they are put into mats and a picture frame is added. The base of the quilt is a very heavy interfacing, Fast 2 Fuse, which is fusible on both sides. Becker gives ideas for inspiration for your quilt, and if you can’t find an idea, several projects have been included. Quick Little Landscape Quilts used a lot of different embellishments to make the quilts appear natural. Some of these include tulle, netting, Angelina, colored dryer lint, and marking tools such as fabric pens, paints, and more. Becker includes as many embellishments as she would use in a large quilt, but I think that since these quilts are smaller, you can pay more attention to the details. If you are new at landscape quilting, or just want to see if you enjoy it, Quick Little Landscape Quilts will let you try your hand at this type of quilting!

Review of "Simply Triangles"
11:39 AM Posted by Judy

Simply Triangles by Barbara H. Cline is full of triangle quilts, of course! But these triangles are very interesting. In order to make most of these quilts, it is important to learn how to sew 'Y' seams, which are covered in Simply Triangles. I want to try their technique. Barbara Cline has designed triangles that are made with strip sets, triangles with dark netting over (to create an illusion of depth in the triangles), triangles with appliques on them, and triangles that have overlapped edges.
Despite being relatively easy, these triangle quilts look like masterpieces. Simply Triangles also covers borders that are the finishing touches on these quilts.
I recommend this book to advanced beginning quilters and more experienced ones.

Review of "Thread Magic Garden"
12:40 PM Posted by Judy

I began reading a copy of Ellen Anne Eddy's new book, Thread Magic Garden, and I am just amazed! Thread Magic Garden is a book for free-motion thread painters (embroidery) and I have never seen a book go into so much detail! Eddy teaches how to make over 20 flowers and a dragonfly, gives examples of what to cut and how to lay the flowers out. She does her work on a stabilizing sandwich, cuts out the designs, and then, there is no puckering or distortion around such heavily stitched flowers. She then uses more embroidery to stitch the flower to the quilt.
Ellen Anne Eddy is well-known for her beautiful embroidered quilts, and in Thread Magic Garden, you can see much of her work, some on a small scale, so we can see the details much closer. Just looking at her work will amaze you, and with her instructions included, this is indeed an inspirational book!

I won!!
12:22 PM Posted by Judy
I completed part of a Blog Hop Party from Quilters Gallery (http://quiltinggallery.com/quilters-fun/quilters-blog-hop-party/) right before Christmas. Then, I received word that I had won My Memories Suite Version 3 software (http://www.mymemories.com/digital_scrapbooking_software. It is for digital scrapbooking, and I can use it for quilting ideas and backgrounds and my sister Monica can use it in her photo scrap books. It even came with some free downloads!
I want to thank Kathleen Brown of http://www.kdquilts.com/ for this wonderful gift. I was only able to do some of the blog hops, and I have never won anything with these hops, so I guess it is still a good idea to do what you can. Thanks so much!

Review of "Transparency Quilts"
1:32 PM Posted by Judy

Do you ever see techniques and wonder how they made something? For me, I have wondered about transparency quilts for a long time, but the book, "Transparency Quilts by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr has answered my questions, and showed me that this is an easy technique. It may sound silly, but I had wondered if I would need to purchase tulle, or something to cover small areas of the quilt. I learned the transparency technique is a matter of using value (how light or dark your fabric is) in your projects. Riggle and Kerr walk you through the process of choosing your fabrics, what works and what doesn't. Transparency Quilts also includes ten projects, using the techniques that have taught us.
I am glad that my questions have been answered by this book, and the techniques can be used both in traditional quilts and art quilts.

My favorite block swap
8:30 AM Posted by Judy
Soon, it will be time for another friendship block swap at QuiltingHaven.com. I have posted pictures from an older swap, then called a Boomerang Swap. I would sure like to encourage you to join us for the swap.
Here's how it works: You send out a fat eight of cotton fabric to everyone who is in your group and they each send one of theirs to you. It's kind of like having Christmas every day you get your mail! Then, you sew, using their fabrics as a bridge, making sure their fabric is included in the block. You send it back to each person in the group and they each send you a block using your fabric. It's really fun and a great way to have others help you make a quilt! Please join me!
