Jacques-Louis David was the preeminent French painter of his era. His specialty was the historical painting. An active supporter of the French Revolution, he was imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre. Following his release, David sought the patronage of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was during the subsequent years that he developed his famous Empire style.
