Short biography
Born Louise Eugénie Alexandrine Marie David in Paris, she began traveling at a young age. In 1904, she married railroad engineer Philippe Néel. She left him in 1911 and traveled east to study Buddhism. Madame David-Néel is best known today for her stay in Lhasa, Tibet, disguised as a pilgrim, in 1924, when it was forbidden to foreigners.
