Short biography
Varina Howell Davis, the daughter of a Mississippi plantation owner, was the second wife of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy in the U.S. Civil War, with whom she had six children. After the war, she completed his autobiography, published in 1890 as Jefferson Davis, A Memoir. She moved to New York City in 1891 to live with her unmarried daughter Winnie and supported herself as a writer. She was invited by her husband's cousin, Kate Davis Pulitzer, to write articles and then a regular column for The New York World, the newspaper owned by Joseph Pulitzer.
