Short biography
Deborah Vivien (née Freeman-Mitford) Cavendish, now the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire DCVO. Known in the family as "Debo," she is the youngest and last survivor of the six famous Mitford sisters whose writings, political activism, and marriages have been a prominent feature of English culture from the 1930s to the present. She married Lord Andrew Cavendish, younger son of the 10th Duke of Devonshire, in 1941. When his older brother (William, Marquess of Hartington), was killed in combat in 1944, Andrew became the heir and eventually 11th Duke of Devonshire, making Deborah the Duchess of Devonshire. She has written numerous books about Chatsworth, the family estate, and played a key role in its restoration and enhancement.
