Well I'm torn. On the one hand this is a lovely quirky caper, and I wanted to enjoy those parts; but it is also and primarily a story about relationships and marriage that I didn't sign up for nor enjoy. I mean it's fine if you're looking for that, I just didn't connect to it particularly in contrast to the antics.
I feel... neutral. So that's a 2.5

I'll leave the rest to the title image in case anyone has people looking over their shoulders.

Eh. This book wasn't quite what I was expecting it to be. It's full of madcap adventure but the underlying theme of the book concerns the absolute disconnect the MC is experiencing with her own life. The author writes this disconnect so well I was left feeling no sympathy or empathy for the MC, even though I could relate to some of what she was going through. Instead I found her to be out-of-control, mean-spirited and ineffectual. I just wanted to tell her to get a grip and fix her damn self already instead of running from one bad moment to the next. I liked the rest of the cast of characters much more and I stuck with the book because of these looney people and what they might do next.

Overall, it just wasn't my thing but it was competently written (although a lot of copywriting errors) and as a first book goes, a decent effort.

As said by another on-site reviewer, an enjoyable campus satire, with appropriate doses of art world satire and relationship angst. There's a nice hat tip to "Lucky Jim" in the novel as well. And an early Pollock, and a flood.

A university on the brink of being flooded, a school of visual arts scrambling to save a valuable Jackson Pollock painting. I have to admit that I had a feeling a deja vu while reading this book. Cate Dicharry lives in Iowa City and her story of the evacuation of the School of Visual Arts clearly uses the 2008 flood of the Iowa River as its jumping off place. But from there, Dicharry tells a story that is a humorous and increasingly wacky, yet oddly believable. An enjoyable campus novel.
