While for most people John Wear Burton is not what you would call a household name, he's one of the serious creators of conflict resolution as a discipline and this is a fine overview of the man's life and work.

I picked up this monograph because I was a student of Burton back in the late Eighties, and I was curious to get some more of his background as a public man. This is not to mention that I felt like I could use a review of his thought.

While I have no intention of trying to summarize the book, the emphasis is on Burton's search to find an alternative to what he saw as the non-solutions offered by the conventional study of international relations, and how he found it in a problem-solving approach that took the requirements of what is needed for individuals to have a meaningful life seriously. The serious response if you will to the gallows conundrum of how one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

If you're concerned about the destabilization brought about by globalization and how the state seems less vital in this day and age, this is certainly a book you'll profit from examining.
