Maria Theresa Villiers attended the South Kensington School of Art and in 1864, married Captain Charles William Earle, a British officer, with whom she had two sons. Mrs. Earle became a noted society horticulturalist and wrote several popular works such as the bestselling Pot-Pourri from a Surrey Garden (1897), full of practical advice. It has been reprinted numerous times, most recently by Summersdale in 2004. It was followed by More Pot-Pourri, A Third Pot-Pourri (1908), and Gardening for the Ignorant (1912). Her last book, Pot-Pourri Mixed by Two, was co-written with Ethel Case. Mrs Earle also wrote Letters to Young and Old (1906) and her memoirs, called Memoirs and Memories (1911).
