(show) Akashic presents Bernardine Evaristo Monday, April 7, 7:30 PM Bernardine Evaristo, author of Mr. Loverman In conversation with Chris Abani Moderated by Colin Channer Reading, discussion, and reception hosted by Akashic Books Brooklyn’s own Akashic Books is proud to bring UK author Bernardine Evaristo to the neighborhood for the US launch of her new novel Mr. Loverman, the story of a gay West Indian man in London trying, with difficulty, to come out of the closet. The novel has been highly praised by the UK press, as well as fellow authors including poet and novelist Chris Abani (author most recently of The Secret History of Las Vegas), who writes, “Bernardine Evaristo uncovers characters lost to history and myth, and with compassion, an original and brilliant voice, and an unparalleled craft—all tinged with humor—she restores them and thus us.” Evaristo talks with Abani tonight, in a conversation moderated by Colin Channer (novelist and editor of Akashic’s Kingston Noir), about diaspora, love, and culture. A reception with complimentary beer, lovingly provided by the Brooklyn Brewery, will follow the reading and discussion.
