US Americans elected a president "of color" (or, as various people claimed, brown, black, half-black, Muslim, African and so on), and this led to hopeful talk of the country being beyond racism or even "post-racial." Helen Fox's new book starts by asking what people might mean by "post-racial." She brings in the voices of thoughtful high school and college students for the millennial perspective, and draws on recent journalism, scholarship and events such as the Black Lives Matter movement. I was impressed by Fox's fluid, conversational style, as if a helpful older sister was guiding me through this uneasy subject area with a reassuring hand on my shoulder. At just over 150 pages, this is a quick way to catch up with the Zeitgeist.… (more)
