Short biography
Emma Halkier was born into a wealthy merchant family and attended a school for girls.  In 1872, she married Nicolaus Urban Gad, a future admiral, with whom she had two children.  Over a period of almost three decades, Gad became Denmark's foremost female literary figure.  She was in the forefront of the movement demanding a woman's right to education, work equality, and proper recognition for artistic achievement.
