Joanne Gilbert, M.Ed., provides a historical look at Nazi resistance through the eyes of the women who dared to defy. As a girl growing up in a Jewish neighborhood in post WWII America, Ms. Gilbert often questioned why the Jews would not question Hitler’s policies and seemingly go along, “like sheep to the slaughter.” This book is her answer to research into this question. The book begins with two histories- one of Poland and the Jews of Poland; the second history is of female opposition to Nazi policies. Ms. Gilbert continues her book with the stories of four women who dared to defy the German order. The stories are told in the women’s own voice written as a result of interviews with the women. Maps and family photographs are interspersed throughout each vignette. A reader discussion guide and glossary of terms are included in the end. Summing Up: Recommended for undergraduate students and above as well as anyone interested in Holocaust history.
