Author Visit Nancy Goldstone discusses The Lady Queen: The Notorious Reign of Joanna I, Queen of Naples, Jerusalem and Sicily. The Lady Queen is a historical account of a beautiful queen, a shocking murder, a papal trial and a reign as triumphant as any in the turbulent and colorful Middle Ages. Joanna I is the only women of the fourteenth century to rule a major European kingdom in her own right. The drama of her life reads like a Shakespearian play. In an age dominated by men, this previously obscure historical figure overcame the suspicious murder of her husband, reduced crime, built hospitals and churches and encouraged the licensing of women physicians. She ruled over one of Europe’s most prestigious courts in her own name for more than thirty years. Goldstone’s research is impeccable.
