Samuel Green was named as the first Poet Laureate of Washington State by Governor Christine Gregoire in December of 2007. He served until January 1st of 2010. Since 2000, he has been a Visiting Professor at Seattle University. His many collections of poetry include The Grace of Necessity, which won the 2008 Washington State Book Award for Poetry. He lives on a remote island in the San Juans with his wife, Sally.
